DMFI APPALLED BY REPUBLICAN LAWMAKERS’ VOTE AGAINST A COMMISSION ON THE CAPITOL ATTACK
Washington, D.C. (May 28, 2021) — In response to Senate Republicans’ vote to block a bill that would have created a commission to investigate the January 6th insurrection at the Capitol building, Democratic Majority for Israel CEO Mark Mellman made the following statement:
“We watched in horror as the Capitol building was attacked on January 6th, one of the darkest days in our nation’s history. That insurrection shook our institutions to the core. It’s unconscionable that Senate Republicans voted to reject a 9/11 style independent commission to examine these attacks and prevent future ones. Are Republicans afraid of the truth? Are they afraid that some of their allies, or even their elected officials, aided the attackers? Are they afraid to challenge the white supremacists who apparently led the attacks? The refusal of Republicans to seek the truth is a disservice to our democracy, and an insult to Capitol police officers, who risked, and in some cases sacrificed, their lives protecting the very Republican members now refusing to investigate the attacks.
By blocking the commission, Republicans perpetuate Donald Trump’s ‘Big Lie’ and undermine the truth.”
