Democratic Majority for Israel President and CEO Mark Mellman issued the following statement today:
“We welcome the Biden Administration’s decision to rejoin the United Nations Human Rights Council as an observer where it can help promote human rights around the world. At the same time, we also recognize that the UNHRC is in serious need of reform. It counts among its membership countries with the most appalling human rights records in the world and operates with an obsessive anti-Israel bias.
“According to the Jerusalem Post, since the council was established fifteen years ago, it condemned Israel 90 times, Syria 35 times, North Korea 13 times, Iran 10 times, and Venezuela twice. Indeed, Israel is the only country that is a permanent item on the council’s agenda. Among the countries that have never been condemned by the UNHRC are China, Cuba, Pakistan, Russia, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Zimbabwe.
“We hope the administration’s renewed engagement can help reform the council and steer it in a more productive and effective direction as it pursues its vitally important human rights mission.”
