Today, Democratic Majority for Israel President & CEO Mark Mellman released the following statement:

“We applaud the Michigan Democratic Party for rejecting Party Chair candidate Al ‘BJ’ Williams at its convention in Detroit. Earlier this month, Mr. Williams made deeply disturbing, antisemitic remarks at a candidate forum, telling attendees that the Democratic Party ‘is not the Jewish party’ while suggesting Jewish Democrats are ‘anti-Arab American.’ We are pleased Michigan Democrats saw his platform for what it was — one of division and hate. DMFI earlier called on Mr. Williams to drop out and on Saturday he did, before the voting began.

“We thank congressional Democrats, including Senators Elissa Slotkin and Gary Peters and Congresswoman Haley Stevens, for firmly denouncing Mr. Williams’ indefensible remarks.

“We congratulate newly elected Party Chair Curtis Hertel on his well-deserved victory. Hertel was endorsed by our separate sister organization DMFI PAC in his 2024 congressional race. We’re confident Mr. Hertel is the right person to unify and lead Michigan’s Democratic Party into the future.”
