Following the announcement of a Memorandum of Understanding between the U.S. and Iran, Democratic Majority for Israel President & CEO Brian Romick today released the following statement:

“As we await more details, we must remember that this war was prolonged due to President Trump’s incoherent and erratic strategy. Even now, there are concerning details about what is and isn’t in this deal. President Trump should bring in serious and experienced negotiators and technical experts to get this deal over the finish line, rather than relying on friends, family, and donors.

“To be clear: any final agreement to end this war must permanently shut down Iran’s nuclear capabilities and put constraints on its ballistic missile programs, while ensuring that the IRGC and its terrorist proxies cannot benefit from any sanctions relief or the release of frozen assets. This agreement must also be subject to vigorous oversight and review by Congress.

“We hope this deal restores stability in the region, ensures Iran will never be able to threaten its neighbors with the prospect of a nuclear weapon, and provides economic relief to the American people. It is also crucial that a long-term agreement address the threat of ballistic missiles and Iranian proxies.

“Despite this tentative deal, the reality is Israel still faces constant threats from Iran-backed terrorist groups like Hamas and Hezbollah. President Trump must not limit or interfere with our ally’s ability to defend itself from very real threats along its border.

“We continue to stand with the Israeli people who have been at war for more than two years, the people of Iran who have endured too many decades under a brutal regime and bravely demanded an end to oppression, as well as the Lebanese people who have lived under Hezbollah’s Iran-backed occupation for decades.

“We will await the final text of this deal and hopefully bring this war to an end.”
