Following reports that President Trump has agreed to a two-week ceasefire with Iran brokered by Pakistan, Brian Romick, President and CEO of Democratic Majority for Israel, made the following statement:
“In a matter of hours, President Trump went from threatening to obliterate an entire civilization to agreeing to a ceasefire. Let’s be clear: President Donald Trump’s threat was outrageous and reckless. Our conflict is with the Iranian regime, not the Iranian people, who themselves have long suffered under its brutality. We welcome this temporary ceasefire as a step toward de-escalation, but a two-week ceasefire is not a long-term agreement. It is a timeout. And the American people deserve to know what happens when it expires. The administration should inform Congress with full transparency on the terms of this ceasefire, the negotiating strategy, and the goals it’s seeking to achieve. Congress should be given the opportunity to exercise its constitutional role, if hostilities resume.
“Two weeks is not much time, but it is enough for the President to present a coherent strategy for the way ahead to the American people and to our allies. We urge him to use it.”
