Washington, D.C. (January 11, 2022) — Following today’s remarks by President Biden and Vice President Harris on voting rights legislation, Democratic Majority for Israel President and CEO Mark Mellman released the following statement:

“One year after violent extremists attacked the Capitol Building and rocked the foundations of our democracy to its core, President Biden and Vice President Harris made clear that we must move forward with urgency to safeguard our democracy and protect voting rights.

“Together, the Freedom to Vote Act and the John Lewis Voting Rights Advancement Act address the anti-democratic trends in our country that are curtailing the right to vote for so many Americans. The Freedom to Vote and John Lewis Acts will create national rules for voting by mail and early voting and secure essential elements of the electoral process — a power specifically granted to the Congress by the Constitution itself.

“We applaud the president and vice president for their leadership in protecting the most bedrock of American rights: the right to vote and have your vote counted, in free, fair, and secure elections not tainted by partisan manipulation.

“We join them in supporting a change to the Senate rules to prevent a minority of senators from blocking action on voting rights.”
