Today, Democratic Majority for Israel President & CEO Mark Mellman issued the following statement:

“We are heartened to see that the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas has begun, marked by the release of Romi Leshem Gonen, Doron Steinbrecher and Emily Tehila Damari today. This moment brings hope and deep joy for the families who have endured an unimaginable nightmare for 15 months, now reunited with their loved ones. We’ll continue to collectively hold our breath until all of the hostages are safely returned home.

“We extend our heartfelt thanks to President Biden, Vice President Harris, Secretary Blinken, National Security Advisor Sullivan, Brett McGurk, and the entire administration for their tireless efforts and unwavering commitment to securing this outcome.

“This crisis began with Hamas’ horrific attacks on October 7th, resulting in the murder of 1,200 innocent people and the abduction of 250 others. For many months Hamas has been the primary obstacle to agreement. Today’s progress would not have been possible without Israel’s determined defense and the steadfast support of the Biden-Harris administration.

“Make no mistake though, Israel is paying a heavy price for this agreement, releasing thousands of convicted terrorists in exchange for the innocent hostages. And Hamas has every intention of continuing its attacks against Israeli civilians.

“While this moment offers relief, much work remains. Hamas must release all remaining captives, be disarmed, and dismantled to pave the way for rebuilding and lasting peace.”
