In response to House Republicans’ plan to cut funding for the Internal Revenue Service to offset emergency military aid for Israel’s security in the wake of Hamas’ barbaric terrorist attacks, Democratic Majority for Israel President & CEO Mark Mellman released the following statement:

“Israel needs and deserves American aid. However, House Republicans are playing politics by conditioning aid to our ally. If House Republicans were true friends to Israel, they would alter this legislation.

“Cutting the IRS budget doesn’t save money, it costs government and citizens money. The Congressional Budget Office conservatively estimated the net budgetary effect of the IRS funding rollback in the debt ceiling negotiation at $900 million. Moreover, the GOP cuts funding for the free digital tax filing system currently being developed by the IRS, raising costs for taxpayers.

“As President Biden said, supporting aid to Israel and Ukraine is ‘a smart investment that’s going to pay dividends for American security for generations.’”
