Today, following reports on a proposed DNC resolution, Democratic Majority for Israel President & CEO Brian Romick released the following statement:
“Democratic Majority for Israel supports an end to the Israel-Hamas war — one that frees all of the hostages, removes Hamas from power, urgently delivers needed humanitarian aid to innocent civilians in Gaza, and affirms the rights of Israelis and Palestinians to live in peace and security.
“Unfortunately, there has been widespread amnesia about the Israel-Hamas war and how we got here. It’s Hamas that started this war and is perpetuating the suffering by not accepting the ceasefire deal.
“That’s why we are deeply troubled by the introduction of a flawed, irresponsible resolution at a Democratic National Committee meeting that will further sow division within our Party and do nothing to help bring an end to the Israel-Hamas war nor end the suffering on both sides. Shockingly, this resolution does not even mention the barbaric attacks of October 7 nor the terrorist group Hamas at all. It calls on members of Congress to unilaterally recognize a Palestinian state which would only reward Hamas’ terrorism. It also wrongly calls for an arms embargo on Israel which will only prolong the war and extend the suffering.
“Should it advance, it will further divide our Party, provide a gift to Republicans, and send a signal that will embolden Israel’s adversaries. As we get closer to the midterms, Democrats need to be united, not continuing intra-party fights that don’t get us closer to taking back Congress.
“We urge the resolutions committee to soundly reject it.
“There is no question that this is a serious moment in the U.S.-Israel relationship. Despite these circumstances we know that the fundamentals of our Party’s support for Israel are strong because they are grounded in shared democratic values, mutual security interests and have endured for more than 75 years.”
