Following Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi’s announcement of her intention to step down from Democratic leadership, Democratic Majority for Israel president and CEO Mark Mellman released the following statement:
“Today marks the end of an historic era. During her nearly 20 years as Speaker of the House and Minority Leader, Nancy Pelosi transformed American society in innumerable ways, large and small. Americans live longer, healthier, and better lives today because of her bold leadership. We salute Speaker Pelosi as she continues her service to San Francisco and the American people, with gratitude for all she has done and will continue to do.
“Speaker Pelosi’s unprecedented impact is evident across a broad range of issues from job creation to healthcare, climate, the environment, education and children, and so many more. Speaker Pelosi also ensured that the Democratic Party continued its proud pro-Israel tradition.
“We’re grateful that she has been a champion of the special relationship between the United States and Israel, welcoming Israeli prime ministers and presidents to the halls of Congress and securing vital aid that gives Israel the resources it needs to defend itself.
“Speaker Pelosi shattered the ‘marble ceiling’ — a powerful reminder of the fundamentally American ideal that, no matter one’s gender, religion, race, sexual orientation, or identity, there are no limits to what one can achieve.
“In history’s light, Nancy Pelosi may well be seen as America’s most skilled and consequential Speaker. We stand in awe of her and of her achievements.”
