Today, Mark Mellman, President and CEO of Democratic Majority for Israel, released the following statement:
“Let us be clear—the ICC’s illegitimate targeting of Israeli leaders is dangerous and wrong. And effective steps must be taken to stop the ICC’s rogue attacks on Israel.
“Senate Democrats support meaningful action against the ICC with respect to its anti-Israel bias. However, today’s vote is not really about punishing the ICC, but rather a political ploy by Republicans to create division where little really exists.
“This poorly drafted bill would hurt American companies and American allies. Republicans refuse to clarify the language because they would rather have a political talking point than a tough bill targeted on the ICC’s anti-Israel behavior.
“It would be easy to both hold the ICC accountable for its attacks on Israel, while also addressing Democrats’ legitimate concerns on how the sanctions may impact U.S. businesses and other U.S. allies that, unlike the U.S. and Israel, are ICC members. We urge Republicans to set partisanship aside and work together to craft legislation that serves U.S. interests and those of our closest allies, Israel key among them.”
