Following the Republican acquittal of former President Donald Trump for inciting the Capitol insurrection, Democratic Majority for Israel President and CEO Mark Mellman released the following statement:

“Donald Trump disgraced the office of the presidency, dishonored the country he served, and threatened the democracy we enjoy. After coddling far-right extremists and embracing conspiracy theories throughout his term — including the Big Lie that the 2020 election was ‘stolen’ — he incited a deadly insurrection at the Capitol on January 6. We applaud Democrats’ efforts to hold President Trump accountable for his high crimes and to reestablish the democratic norms on which our system stands.

“We’re grateful for the extraordinary House managers, including Representatives Jamie Raskin, Joaquin Castro, David Cicilline, Madeleine Dean, Diana DeGette, Ted Lieu, Joe Neguse, Eric Swalwell and Delegate Stacey Plaskett, for presenting a compelling, cogent, and eloquent argument before the Senate.

“It is disappointing — though not surprising — that the vast majority of Senate Republicans have decided to put party over country by refusing to convict the former president for his failure to uphold his oath and for actively encouraging an assault against a co-equal branch of government. By voting to acquit President Trump, Republicans today establish a truly dangerous precedent for future presidents.

“We thank all the senators, in both parties, who did what was right for our country in voting to convict former President Trump.”
