Today, on Israel’s Independence Day, Democratic Majority for Israel President & CEO Mark Mellman released the following statement:

“On the 75th anniversary of the modern reestablishment of the State of Israel, DMFI proudly celebrates Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israel’s Independence Day. This day marks the culmination of the Jewish people’s incredible journey to build a thriving democracy, against all odds, in their ancestral homeland in the heart of the Middle East.

“For the past 75 years, Israel’s existence has been a beacon of hope and a symbol of resilience for both Jews and non-Jews around the world. From the very first days of its modern reestablishment, Israel has faced numerous challenges, including wars, terror attacks, and attempts to delegitimize its existence. On its first full day as an independent nation, five Arab armies invaded and attempted to push the Jews into the Mediterranean Sea, but Israel prevailed. Today, Israel defends itself from rocket attacks in the north and south, a genocidal Iranian regime to the east, and near weekly terror attacks.

“Yet, despite these obstacles and threats, the Israeli people have remained steadfast in their commitment to peace, freedom, and democracy. While the protests against the government’s proposed judicial overall, now sweeping the country, point to potentially serious problems, they are also testimony to the vibrance of Israel’s democracy.

“As Democrats dedicated to strengthening the U.S.-Israel relationship, we stand with the Israeli people as they continue to build a brighter future for themselves and for all who seek peace and prosperity in the region. On this 75th Yom Ha’atzmaut, we reaffirm our staunch support for the State of Israel and its right to exist as a democratic and Jewish state, living in peace and security alongside its neighbors.

“We wish a happy Independence Day to all Israelis as they celebrate today!”
