Today, Mark Mellman, President and CEO of Democratic Majority for Israel, released the following statement:
“America’s alliances are critical to our national security, to global stability, and to America’s economic prosperity. The Trump-Vance Administration is weakening these essential partnerships and jeopardizing American leadership on the world stage by slashing or threatening to cut U.S. foreign aid.
“These reckless cuts will make America less safe and less prosperous.
“While DMFI does not agree with every grant made to every group, we strongly support not only U.S. aid to Israel, but also the full panoply of foreign aid. U.S. humanitarian, military and other foreign assistance accounts for only about 1.5% of the federal budget. The investment is small, and the return is substantial.
“Foreign aid supports vital security cooperation with key allies, strengthens diplomatic ties, and bolsters democratic institutions around the world.
“Foreign aid funds lifesaving humanitarian programs, including those led by USAID, which provide food assistance, disaster relief, and medical care to vulnerable communities.
“Foreign aid is an investment in America’s future—one that enhances stability abroad, creates economic opportunities and prevents conflicts before they start.
“Turning our backs on our allies is not leadership; it’s a betrayal of the values and interests that have made America strong.
“America must stand by its allies—because we are safer, stronger, and more prosperous when we do.”
