Today, with the announcement of an agreement that would release hostages held by Hamas and bring about a ceasefire in Gaza, Democratic Majority for Israel President & CEO Mark Mellman issued the following statement:
“We welcome news of an agreement to secure the long-awaited release of hostages kidnapped by Hamas and the temporary cessation of hostilities in Gaza. This breakthrough agreement achieved through negotiations between Israel and Hamas and brokered by Egypt, Qatar, and the United States, marks an essential step toward alleviating the immense suffering of those taken captive 15 months ago, their families, and the civilians caught in this tragic conflict.
“We extend our deepest gratitude to President Biden for his steadfast leadership and diplomacy in securing this outcome. The President, Secretary Blinken, National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan, Brett McGurk, and the entire administration have demonstrated tireless resolve and remarkable commitment in the face of immense challenges as Hamas consistently obstructed progress by refusing to accept a deal for far too long.
“It is critical to remember that this devastating war began with Hamas’ brutal attacks on October 7th, which included the abduction of innocent Israelis and the senseless slaughter of 1,200 more. Every hostage taken, every family shattered, and every Israeli, Palestinian, and foreign national killed are a direct consequence of Hamas’ decision to launch an unprovoked campaign of terror and violence. Without those attacks, every one of these individuals would be alive today.
“Since October 7th, 2023, Israel has succeeded in degrading Hamas’ terrorist infrastructure, countering Iranian proxies on the battlefield, and laying the groundwork for a Middle East realignment with the fall of Assad in Syria. Without Israel’s continued military pressure and continued U.S. support over the past 15 months, today’s agreement would have been impossible.
“While we are relieved and comforted by the plan to release hostages and end hostilities, our work is not finished. Hamas must release any remaining captives, it must be fully disarmed and dismantled, and its tyrannical rule over Gaza must end. Then the rebuilding process can begin to ensure lasting peace and security for Israelis and Palestinians alike.
“In this moment of cautious optimism, we are reminded of the power of determined, principled leadership and remaining united with our democratic allies. While we take solace in the progress achieved, we continue to grieve the lives lost and the unimaginable suffering endured by the victims of the October 7th attacks and their loved ones. We remain committed to the work ahead to ensure that no family endures the pain and devastation caused by Hamas’ violence and terror again.”
