Following the Arab League’s historic statement condemning Hamas’s October 7 attack and calling for Hamas’s disarmament and removal from power in Gaza, 30 Democratic Members of Congress sent a letter urging Secretary of State Marco Rubio to seize this rare diplomatic opening. The letter calls for the U.S. to work urgently toward a breakthrough that would remove Hamas from power, secure the immediate and unconditional release of all Israeli hostages held by Hamas, and de-escalate the conflict. DMFI endorsed the letter and its President & CEO Brian Romick released the following statement:
“We thank the Democratic Members of Congress who came together to champion this important message. The U.S. must act quickly to seize on this diplomatic opportunity which presents a unique opening to both ensure Israel’s security and create a future for Israelis and Palestinians free from the terrorist group Hamas.
“While there is much we disagree with in the Arab League statement, its historic nature is unprecedented. By calling for the release of hostages, condemning the October 7 attacks, disavowing Hamas and endorsing a two-state path, Arab countries have signaled a potential willingness to be part of a new, constructive chapter for the Middle East.
“At the same time, we call on all leaders to reject unilateral performative recognition of a Palestinian state which risks emboldening Hamas rather than advancing peace. Instead, the focus should remain on pursuing a productive, diplomatic path. This is a rare moment when American engagement, working closely with Israel, Arab partners, and other international stakeholders, can make a real difference — helping to free hostages still held captive by Hamas, finally ending Hamas’s violent rule in Gaza, and fostering responsible governance that improves the lives of civilians.
“DMFI is proud to support this letter and applauds Democratic lawmakers who are urging action following the Arab League’s statement. We look forward to supporting their efforts to translate this momentum into lasting progress for Israel and the region.”
