Today, Democratic Majority for Israel President & CEO Mark Mellman released the following statement:
“We are saddened to learn of the passing of former President Jimmy Carter today. As President, he helped negotiate the Camp David Accords, securing Egyptian recognition of Israel, an end to hostilities between Egypt and Israel, and the first normalization of relations between Israel and an Arab country.
“Americans continue to benefit from his legacy including the creation of the Departments of Energy and Education, which play vital roles in America’s continued success.
“While we had some profound differences of opinion on important issues, President Carter’s devotion to service and charitable work should be an inspiration to all of us. Whether it was raising money for good causes or building homes for the homeless well into his 90s, President Carter set an example of tikkun olam, repairing the world, few will ever rival.
“We send our sincerest condolences to his children, grandchildren, family, and loved ones. May President Carter’s memory be a blessing.”
