As we enter 2026, Democrats must press for credible deterrence of Iran while supporting the Iranian people, ensure tangible progress on Phase 2 of the Gaza peace plan, and maintain sustained diplomatic engagement to achieve these objectives.

A strong MOU must continue the longstanding, bipartisan effort to ensure Israel has what it needs to defend itself in a rapidly evolving regional landscape, and the United States must ensure Israel’s Qualitative Military Edge (QME) is fully maintained – an issue that has taken on heightened urgency following announcements on advanced U.S.-Saudi defense cooperation.

Since the hostage release and ceasefire deal was agreed to by Israel and Hamas, all the living hostages have been released, all but one of the remains of the deceased hostages have been returned, humanitarian aid has surged into Gaza, and the international community has formally endorsed the 20-point peace plan as part of a UN Security Council Resolution. These are all positive developments that must be built upon to ensure lasting security for Israel and stability in the region.

The release of all living hostages and ceasefire is welcome and a source for hope. Now, President Trump must prioritize full implementation of 20-point Peace Plan for Gaza, ensuring lasting security and stability and pressuring Hamas to uphold its commitments and agree to disarm.

Those supporting additional restrictions on offensive weapon sales to Israel speak of peace, but by degrading Israel’s ability to deter adversaries committed to its destruction, they will bring more war and more suffering, not peace.

Every dollar spent to help ensure Israel can defend itself by itself is also a dollar spent to bolster counterterrorism, protect our homeland, and keep our brave service members from having to fight more wars in the Middle East.
